Description

This module is aimed at healthcare practitioners working in the operating department who wish to develop a career in anaesthetics to enhance the care given to patients in the operating department

Practitioners undertaking this module must have been working in the perioperative environment for a minimum of twelve months, and should preferably have completed either an intern programme or departmental programme in the perioperative environment. Practitioners will have normally complete / demonstrate knowledge in Perioperative Practice or equivalent

Practitioners MUST be on the anaesthetic rota FULL TIME throughout the duration of the module. Practitioners must be able to complete a minimum of 300 clinical hours in anaesthetics during the module.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Critically discuss the role of the anaesthetic practitioner and how that role interacts with other members of the operating department team
  2. Critically evaluate the anaesthetic environment to ensure safety for the patients undergoing anaesthesia
  3. Critically apply knowledge of contemporary clinical guidelines and research to inform anaesthetic practice
  4. Develop an ability to comprehensively assess patients intra-operatively using invasive and non-invasive monitoring
  5. Apply an in-depth understanding of pathophysiology and evidence-base to underpin anaesthetic practice
  6. Develop competence in the selection and use of equipment and technology integral to anaesthetic practice, demonstrate an understanding of the consequences of improper use
  7. Critical appraise the unique care needs of different patient groups from the variety of surgical settings using anaesthesia
  8. Critique the different methods of, and select the appropriate choice of airway in advanced airway management
