This module will enable participants to explore issues related to the provision of care to women in high dependency situations and reflect on their current skills developing further skills as necessary. Inter-professional working will be highlighted.

This module will enable students to:

  • Reflect and review practice in relation to high dependency care of women receiving maternity care.
  • Provide a forum in which midwives can explore issues related to their practice taking into account current evidence.

The course is also offered as a postgraduate (level 7) award.


Who is this module for?

Registered midwife or Registered nurse working within an obstetric unit.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Critically evaluate the holistic approach to high dependency care.
  2. Critically analyse the physiology and pathophysiology related to high dependency situations.
  3. Critically discuss the high dependency care given to women and their families in light of current evidence.
  4. Critically discuss the medical management of identified conditions requiring high dependency care.
  5. Critically discuss pharmacology in relation to medical conditions requiring high dependency care.
