The aim of the module is to enable those with no previous specialist knowledge to gain an evidence based understanding of contemporary diabetes care in order to maximize their effectiveness with patients in the clinical setting.

This module is for healthcare practitioners, such as nurses, working in a variety of care settings who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in contemporary diabetes care across the lifespan. The module focuses on client assessment, therapeutics, complications and decision making in practice.

Essay

1. Discuss the aetiology, epidemiology and pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
2. Critically analyse the evidence supporting holistic assessment leading to therapeutic interventions used in the management of diabetes.
3. Critically review the main complications arising from diabetes and how they are managed.
4. Critically analyse the roles of the diabetes specialist nurse, other members of the multidisciplinary team and your own contribution within it.
5. Critically explore the psychosocial implications of living with diabetes and critically appraise a range of appropriate client/carer/family educational strategies relevant to diabetes care.
6. Critically discuss the influence of local, national and international developments in diabetes care provision.
7. Critically review the public health approach to diabetes care from the perspective of its preventative strategies including health promotion and health education.
