This module will enable students to enhance their knowledge of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and evidence-based management of common acute respiratory presentations.

Students will develop their skills to enable them to systematically assess, prioritise and subsequently plan appropriate evidence-based management for acute respiratory patients. It is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage patients with acute respiratory presentations.

Healthcare practitioners working in an appropriate acute clinical area caring for patients with respiratory needs.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Develop an in-depth understanding of applied anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
  2. Demonstrate and justify a range of assessment skills to perform a systematic respiratory assessment of an acutely ill respiratory patient, interpreting the data in relation to the underlying respiratory condition.
  3. Critically evaluate clinical findings, demonstrating knowledge of key diagnostic criteria, associated underlying pathophysiology and differential diagnoses.
  4. Critically discuss appropriate evidence-based management for patients needing respiratory support.
  5. Contribute effectively to the multi-disciplinary team to communicate complex information.
