This module will enable healthcare practitioners to develop the clinical skills and knowledge to provide appropriate and effective care to patients in the post-anaesthetic care environment.

The course is also offered as a undergraduate (level 5) award.

Who is this module for?

Healthcare practitioners currently working in the post anaesthetic care unit (PACU) of main operating theatres or day surgery environments.

Participants should have a minimum of six months experience of working within a PACU setting and should have completed the undergraduate 'Perioperative practice' module or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Critically analyse how surgery and anaesthesia affect the patient in the post-operative period.
  2. Apply evidence based knowledge of monitoring/ assessment in planning, implementing and evaluating post-anaesthetic care from admission to discharge from the unit.
  3. Demonstrate competence in the management of airway and respiratory insufficiency in the post-anaesthetic period.
  4. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of, and skill in the management of cardio-vascular instability in the post-anaesthetic period.
  5. Critically analyse the physiological and psychological principles that underpin post-anaesthetic pain management.
  6. Select appropriate strategies for the management of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and critically evaluate their effectiveness.
  7. Distinguish the unique care needs of different patient groups from the variety of surgical settings.
