This module is for practitioners working within adult Intensive Care areas and will explore the management of complex level 3 patients conditions using current evidence base and patient centred care.
When taken in conjunction with the Intensive Care Patient Assessment module, this module meets the requirements for the Step two and Step three competencies which are incorporated in the National Standards for Adult Critical Care Nurse Education (2016). 


Who is this module for?

Participants should be:

  • Working within an intensive care unit
  • Able to participate in the planning and delivery of care to critically ill patients in clinical practice
  • Able to complete all practice competencies within their own clinical areas

Learning Outcomes
  1. Appraise ethical issues involved in the care of adult intensive care patient.
  2. Select and review the current research and evidence base when managing adult intensive care patient.
  3. Propose and select the appropriate range of services needed to provide effective, integrated and high quality care for adult intensive care patients.
  4. Evaluate communication and critically appraise the relationship between patients/relatives/visitors in order to promote participation in decision making and care planning of adult intensive care patients.
  5. Interact effectively with the interdisciplinary team to provide collaborative care adult intensive care patient within the tertiary, secondary and through to primary healthcare setting.
  6. Critically examine the professional role, attitudes, values, beliefs and ethical issues when caring for adult intensive care patients and their families.
  7. Evaluate sources of information and use information technology that aids management of care.

Mode of Delivery
Online learning & classroom - NOTE: In the autumn term, due to Covid-19 social distancing requirements, face-to-face teaching will be limited to clinically focused modules incorporating practical skills teaching. This will remain the case throughout the 2020/21 academic year, until social distancing requirements can be sufficiently relaxed to allow a greater proportion of on-site teaching. At the time of writing, it is not known when this will be.
