The module is designed for health and social care professionals who wish to develop a critical understanding of the broader context of advanced practice and the professional issues involved when working at this level. Leadership and collaborative practice, and developing self and others underpin this module.


Who is this module for?

Registered healthcare practitioners normally with two year's post-qualifying practice experience.



Programme entry requirements.

Students should be practising in a role which enables completion of the module assessment (or for full-time students, have recently been in such a role). Students will usually be advanced practitioners or working towards advanced practice within their chosen speciality


Advanced practice route

Applicants for this route will be required to meet all the following additional requirements:

  • a minimum of two years full-time experience (or the equivalent in part-time hours) in health or social care employment
  • be employed in a senior role
  • demonstrate they are working in a practice setting which enables the achievement of the specialist compulsory module outcomes relating to the Advanced Practice competencies (Great Britain, Department of Health, 2010)
  • applicants will need to be in a clinical practitioner role to meet the course requirements
  • an informal interview will be required to ensure you meet the criteria

Learning Outcomes
  1. Critically discuss the concept of advanced practice and underpinning themes.
  2. Analyse critically and reflect upon own development and that of others within an advanced practice setting.
  3. Critically evaluate leadership and change management theories, concepts and strategies in relation to the practice environment.
  4. Analyse critically and synthesise the evidence-base pertinent to advanced practice.
  5. Critically discuss and reflect upon the professional issues that impact the advanced practitioner.

Mode of Delivery
Online - NOTE: In the autumn term, due to Covid-19 social distancing requirements, face-to-face teaching will be limited to clinically focused modules incorporating practical skills teaching. This will remain the case throughout the 2020/21 academic year, until social distancing requirements can be sufficiently relaxed to allow a greater proportion of on-site teaching. At the time of writing, it is not known when this will be.
