This module is an option module within the MSc Healthcare Practice programme and MSc ACP Pathway.  It may also be taken as a free standing module. 

This module is designed to advance clinician understanding of the role of physical activity in promoting and maximising health. Physical activity, lifestyle management, exercise and sport will all be discussed as common interventions in this area. The module will develop the ability to critically examine physical activity guidelines and scientific principles and apply them within the wider sociological and psychological context. Through debate and interactive tutorials learners will reflect on current practice and consider the role they play in improving the health of individuals, communities and groups specific to their practice.

Physical activity is considered a key factor to a healthier population and is the responsibility of all health professionals. As such this module is appropriate to all clinicians with concepts, principles and knowledge able to be applied to all areas of clinical practice.

This module will enable learners to explore the social, health and practical issues relating to exercise and physical activity and discuss how to structure physical activity and exercise programmes to best meet the intended aims whilst promoting participation.
The module will support learners to consider the role of the health professional in the promoting health at both a population and individual level and critique the current evidence base for physical activity interventions and apply these to clinical practice


Programme entry requirements


This module will be assessed by a 2500-word proposal for an intervention that promotes physical activity and / or reduces sedentary behaviour to enhance the health and wellbeing of a target group. The assignment will be separated into an intervention proposal (2000words) and a plain English report (500 words).

Learning Outcomes
  1. Critically explore and communicate the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and health 
  2. Evaluate and critique the evidence base underpinning the physical, psychological and social basis for physical activity interventions
  3. Justify and critique appropriate physical activity interventions in the management of complex clinical scenarios
  4. Debate and evaluate  the relationship between physical activity participation and additional factors such policy, disease, age and culture
