This module will enable participants to explore issues related to the provision of care to women in high dependency situations and reflect on their current skills, and develop further skills as necessary. Inter-professional working will be highlighted.

Students will be able to:
- Reflect on and enhance their practice in relation to high dependency care of women receiving maternity care.

- Provide a forum in which midwives, nurses and physician associates can demonstrate their decision making and leadership skills in relation to their practice taking into account current evidence.

The course is also offered as an undergraduate (level 6) award.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate advanced understanding of the holistic approach to high dependency care.
  2. Demonstrate in-depth systematic understanding of the physiology and patho-physiology related to high dependency situations.
  3. Critically evaluate and synthesize the research and evidence in relation to high dependency care given to women and their families in light of current evidence.
  4. Make informed judgements and critically discuss the medical management of identified conditions requiring high dependency care.
  5. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of pharmacology in relation to medical conditions requiring high dependency care.
