This is a compulsory core module for all Advanced Clinical Practice pathways and is designed to support the learner/learner to establish a comprehensive foundation in clinical leadership which will support the ongoing development of self and others as leaders in advanced clinical practice.  It may also be taken as a free standing module. 

The module draws on contemporary research, opinion and wider leadership theory to equip learner advanced clinical practitioners with the knowledge and skills which underpin effective clinical leadership including approaches to operational and strategic service configuration and quality improvement within and across traditional professional and operational boundaries. Opportunities to learn with and from colleagues include membership of multiprofessional learning sets and pathway-specific tutorials for individual learners to plan and contextualise learning within clinical specialty. 

AIMS:
This module will enable learners to extend capacity to effectively synthesise and critically apply relevant management and leadership principles, theories and frameworks to:
• Initiate evaluation of the impact of multi-professional advanced clinical practice on service function, effectiveness and quality, ensuring good clinical and financial governance
• Lead, develop and ensure governance for a multi-professional advanced clinical practice workforce
• Extend the learner’s capacity to effectively synthesise and critically apply relevant management, leadership and co-design principles, theories and frameworks to the leadership and influence of multi-professional practice innovation and service redesign solutions, working across traditional boundaries for service user benefit

Learning Outcomes
  1. Evidence the ability to critically appraise historical and contemporary models of clinical leadership.
  2. Evidence the impact of a critical awareness of management and leadership principles, theories and frameworks in relation to own practice-based setting and with reference to both organisational priorities and wider policy context. 
  3. Discern between contrasting principles, theories and frameworks for service evaluation, quality improvement and implementation science.
  4. Demonstrate critical awareness of the application of principles, theories and frameworks for service evaluation, quality improvement and implementation science
  5. Demonstrate the ability to draw critically on management and leadership principles, theories and frameworks to support and empower a compassionate multi-professional workforce in the context of advanced clinical practice, with a focus on patient benefit and personalised care.
  6. Demonstrate confidence and self-awareness in motivating others and providing a leadership role model to promote a culture of continuous professional and organisational learning for patient benefit.
  7. Demonstrate an advanced critical understanding of the legal, regulatory, ethical dimensions of multi-professional leadership in an advanced clinical practice context.
  8. Evidence the critical application of advanced clinical expertise to facilitate and provide consultancy across professional and service boundaries, influencing clinical practice to enhance quality, reduce unwarranted variation and promote the sharing and adoption of best practice.
