This module will explore the science of paediatric endocrine nursing. A diagnosis within paediatric endocrinology can be given at birth, throughout childhood and also into adolescence, and its impact on the child and family can potentially be lifelong. Students studying this module will be working within a paediatric endocrine environment, or caring for children and young people where their endocrine effects are secondary to their main treatment.

Entry requirements

240 Credit points of which no more than 120 are at level 4 and no less than 120 at level 5 or equivalent. In exceptional circumstances if an individual has evidence of recent professional learning they may enter with 60 Credit points at level 5 or equivalent

The module therefore allows students to develop their current practice and prepare for future roles, supporting their employability and career progression.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic pathophysiology of common endocrine conditions in children.
  • Identify and critically examine the role of hormone replacement therapy in children, and compare the benefits of similar treatments.

Intellectual skills:

  • Analyse ethical dilemmas which may be encountered in treatment options.
  • Apply current relevant research to evaluate and analyse clinical practice.

Practical Skills:

  • Demonstrate a holistic approach to assessment and solving problems to enhance nursing care to support the child and family.

Transferable skills:

  •  Demonstrate the ability to use reflection to improve practice.
