This MSc Midwifery top-up course is available to students who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery (5766) at LSBU or completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery elsewhere, who wish to progress to complete the full MSc and meet the entry requirements. The MSc Midwifery top-up will consist of the 60 credit Dissertation module which is a cross-school module for all Masters level courses.
The Dissertation module provides the student with the opportunity to consolidate and extend their knowledge and understanding of research and evaluation design and associate methods of inquiry during six taught sessions, to achieve the award of MSc Midwifery. This module will enable students to undertake an original enquiry in a chosen area of professional practice, either through a systematic review of the literature or a research/work-based project such as service evaluation or audit. Students will subsequently be supported by a named supervisor to develop the practical skills necessary to plan and carry out their chosen project.

Career benefits
Building an academic research skillset is valued as a significant contributor to the development of advanced practitioners as a distinct career pathway, in which midwives demonstrate knowledge and skills across clinical practice, research, education and leadership and management. The Nursing & Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Standards of proficiency for midwives (NMC 2024) acknowledge a focus on the midwife as a colleague, scholar and leader, able to apply evidence as critical thinkers to resolve problems in clinical care. This is further supported by opportunities to develop a clinical academic career, largely supported by National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) integrated clinical academic pathway. For this reason, the opportunity to complete a MSc Midwifery will increase career opportunities, enabling midwives to make a significant contribution across clinical practice, research, education, leadership and management.
